Inspired by the Sky, Powered by the Air

Inspired by the night sky, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos Marqueterie Céleste is part contemporary sculpture and part embodiment of horological inventiveness. More than just being shaped by machine, the multi-faceted cabinet uses straw that has been dried, dyed, slit, and flattened to a wood panel by artisans of Maonia, a small Parisian art marquetry atelier. To give its three-dimensional mystifying deep blue appearance, each fibre of straw used has been ideally positioned, so as to create the desired overall effect.

Even with such energy efficiency, Jaeger-LeCoultre says the Atmos Marqueterie Céleste is designed to remain accurate for 3861 years

Where the Atmos Marqueterie Céleste defies convention is the source from which it gains its power. Housed in the middle of the cabinet is a hermetic capsule containing a gaseous mixture that dilates when the temperature rises or contracts when it drops, with variations of a single degree’s Celsius providing a 48-hour power reserve, almost as though it is running on an invisible energy of the cosmos. Its annular balance is said to require 250 times less energy than a standard wristwatch, and it would take 60 million Atmos clocks to equal the consumption of a 15W electric bulb. Even with such energy efficiency, Jaeger-LeCoultre says the Atmos Marqueterie Céleste is designed to remain accurate for 3861 years, truly a creation that can measure the eternity of the universe beyond.
