Move over Honda Malaysia, which just announced record-breaking sales for 2010. UMW Toyota Motor, the official distributor of Toyota and Lexus cars in Malaysia, is still the top non-national automaker by sales volume in this country—for the 21st consecutive year. In 2010, 92,000 vehicle units were sold, representing a 12 percent growth compared with the 82,000 units in 2009.
More than 15 percent of all cars sold in Malaysia last year wore Toyota or Lexus badges. Topping the sales chart is the Vios with 33,700 units. Coming in second and third are the Hilux with 18,600 units and the Camry with 11,500 units. With sales led by the RX, Lexus Malaysia chipped in with 430 units last year, growing from 300 units in 2009.
UMW Toyota Motor's manufacturing facility in Shah Alam, Assembly Services Sdn Bhd produced 69,000 units in 2010, the highest number since its founding in 1968. The production line currently consists of the Vios, Hilux, Fortuner and Innova among others, and will be joined by the next-generation Camry in 2012.
