Honda Malaysia has announced record sales of 44,486 units for 2010 and has now set an even higher target at 48,000 units for 2011, a year in which the total industry volume (TIV) is predicted to peak at more than 600,000 units. 2010 has been a tremendous year for more than just Honda Malaysia, however, as Perodua, BMW and Volkswagen have all announced record-breaking sales of their own.
As expected, locally-assembled models constituted 94 percent (41,691 units) of the total sales. Almost half of that figure is contributed by the City with 19,946 units—45 percent of the grand total. The Civic came in second with 20 percent, followed by the Accord with 16.5 percent. 12.5 percent was chipped in by the facelifted CR-V, which enjoyed a 60 percent sales growth undeterred by the launch of the Nissan X-Trail and Hyundai Tucson.
Fully-imported models accounted for 6 percent (2795 units) of the total sales. The Stream led the pack with 1062 units, and the newcomer Freed with 851 units. The Jazz, Civic Type R, Civic Hybrid, Accord V6 and Odyssey made up the rest. Surprisingly, the Civic Hybrid experienced sales dropping from 216 units in 2009 to 129 units in 2010 despite a significant price reduction towards the end of last year.
The Insight has received more than 1300 bookings since its launch at the Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show last month, with deliveries to follow in mid-February. Going forward, the CR-Z sports hybrid could arrive this year to take advantage of the full duty exemption valid till the end of 2011, while the facelifted Accord could be launched sometime in 2011 too.
