Detroit Auto Show: 2012 All-New Volkswagen Passat

The 2012 all-new, seventh-generation Volkswagen Passat is on display at the Detroit Auto Show, bearing the same Jetta-inspired looks which should prove neither exciting nor offensive to most. Developed specifically with American consumers in mind, the U.S. Passat is longer and wider than the European Passat, though both are based on the same platform as the current Passat.

Set to go on sale later this year, the U.S. Passat is available with a choice of three engines: a 172 hp, 240 Nm 2.5-litre five-cylinder petrol unit, a 284 hp, 349 Nm 3.6-litre V6 petrol unit and a 142 hp, 320 Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel unit. A five-speed manual gearbox is standard with the 2.5-litre petrol and 2.0-litre diesel. Optionally, the 2.5-litre petrol can be paired with a six-speed automatic gearbox and the 2.0-litre diesel with a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox, which comes standard with the 3.6-litre V6.
