Toyota has revealed the Prius V MPV and the Prius C Concept at the Detroit Auto Show, expanding the Prius family to four models alongside the standard Prius and the Prius plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHV). The Prius V has been confirmed for sale in the U.S. in the third quarter of 2011, though the Prius C Concept previews a Prius small-size hatchback that will only be launched in the first half of 2012.
Toyota has given scarce details on the upcoming mini-Prius except that it will provide the best value-for-money and the highest efficiency in the hybrid segment. While the Prius C Concept looks stylish with a particularly striking front end, most features would likely be toned down a notch come production in order to appeal to a bigger audience.
Instantly recognisable without appearing bulky, the slightly taller, longer Prius V offers more head- and leg-room as well as 50 percent more cargo capacity at around 970 litres compared with the standard Prius, though there are no more than five seats. Increased space aside, the Prius V will be the first Toyota to feature the new Entune multi-media system which supports mobile apps. The 136-hp 1.8-litre petrol-electric Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain remains unchanged.
