The 2012 all-new Saab 9-4X has been officially revealed. Tasked with broadening the appeal of the Saab brand, the new crossover SUV could be crucial to Saab's return to financial health under the ownership of Spyker. The luxury five-seater 9-4X will be positioned against the likes of Audi Q5 and Volvo XC60 when it arrives in showrooms across Europe in late 2011.
Spied undisguised more than three months ago, the 9-4X sports a design that remains faithful to its concept form first seen at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show, with a front end shared with the new Saab 9-5 and an imposing appearance well-differentiated from rivals'. The interior, featuring a centre console slanted towards the driver, is distinctively Saab as well.
Based on General Motors' Theta Premium platform, which combines the best of GM's Theta and Epsilon 2 platforms, the 9-4X draws power from two V6 engines: a naturally-aspirated 3.0-litre V6 with 265 hp and 302 Nm, and a turbocharged 2.8-litre V6 with 300 hp and 400 Nm. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard for both engines.
