Ferrari's Fernando Alonso has continued his late charge for a third world championship title, winning the Singapore Grand Prix following his victory in Italy two weeks ago. The Spaniard put up a dominant display, leading second-placed Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull from start to finish. Vettel stayed with Alonso throughout the race, but was never close to mounting a serious challenge. The two pitted at the same time for a tyre change, but Alonso remained ahead.
Third place went to the other Red Bull driver Mark Webber, who emerged unscathed from a collision with McLaren's Lewis Hamilton right after a second safety car period restart. Hamilton, who initiated the overtaking, was not so lucky, however, retiring for the second race in a row—his title hopes hanging by a tread with only four races left. Teammate Jenson Button finished fourth.
Webber currently heads the drivers' standings with 202 points, Alonso has 191 and Hamilton on 182. Vettel is one point behind with 181 and reigning world champion Button on 177. To Alonso, anyone of the five could win the championship come the end of the season. “All five contenders are still more or less with the same possibility”, the Spaniard said.
“In these four races any of us can win two or three consecutive races and be in a good position, but if you make mistakes you can be off the championship. We need to keep our concentration—hopefully with no mistakes and hopefully we keep it the same way in Japan as well”.
