Naza and General Motors are in the midst of negotiation regarding the setting up of CKD (completely-knocked-down) operations for Chevrolet models in Naza's Gurun plant in Kedah. GM has made known its intention to play a bigger role in South-East Asia, and Malaysia is not only the largest passenger car market in the region but it has the potential to be a regional manufacturing hub.
“We are talking to GM to produce one or two models for the right-hand-drive market”, said Datuk Faisal Nasimuddin, Naza Group of Companies Joint Group Executive Chairman. “GM intends to turn Malaysia into its regional hub for certain products and definitely we need to have facilities to support such a plan”.
By 2013, Naza aims to sell between 35,000–40,000 Chevrolet units annually and to become a top-four non-national brand in Malaysia. To achieve those ambitious goals in three short years, Naza targets to increase the dealer count to 40 from the current 11, as well as to commence CKD operations in the next one to two years.
