Volkswagen Golf GTI, Beetle & Passat CC Heading For Local Assembly?

Volkswagen Malaysia will most likely be locally assembling the Golf GTI, Beetle and Passat CC, going by the popularity of the three models which, together, represent 68 percent of the total volume of cars sold in the first half of 2010. The Golf GTI accounted for 273 units, the Beetle with 96 units and the Passat CC contributed 90 units.
Upon the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Volkswagen Malaysia and DRB-Hicom Bhd, it was revealed that three models will be heading for local assembly in DRB-Hicom's Pekan plant by the first quarter of 2011, which would lower significantly the pricing of all models involved.
Boasting an estimated annual production capacity of 60,000 units, the Pekan plant adds Volkswagen to a list of current customers including Mercedes-Benz and Suzuki. The next logical step would be for Volkswagen to leverage on Malaysia as an export base for the ASEAN region.
DRB-Hicom, which owns the Volkswagen-owned Audi brand's local franchise via Euromobil Sdn Bhd, had previously stated their intention to locally assemble certain Audi models by 2012—the year by which local sales volume was targeted to reach 1000 units, although the plan could be brought forward or delayed depending on the year's sales volume.
