McLaren intends to explore hybrid technology for use in their upcoming supercars. The U.K.-based maker of extreme supercars has posted a job opening on their official website, seeking a senior engineer capable in the development and deploying of hybrid technology—a fact verified by a McLaren spokesperson who said: “It (hybrid technology) is something we want as a forward-thinking, technology-driven company. We have been considering it for future projects. All the advert means is that we are looking for a senior engineer in powertrain hybrid technology...”
A couple of McLaren supercars, including the SLR and McLaren F1, are due for replacement in the next few years, and there is a real possibility that hybrid technology may feature prominently. Less clear is the kind of technology to be used. A possibility, however, lies in McLaren's Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS), a regenerative braking mechanism that upon braking converts kinetic energy into energy for storing and future use. It seems these days that supercars too have to follow the tend of going the energy-efficient, “green” route.
