If you have been eyeing Mazda's CX-7 and CX-9 SUVs, but have been put off by the size or, more likely, the considerable price tag of either model, this piece of news should be of particular interest to you. Mazda will be launching a small SUV crossover at the end of 2011, according to Mazda insiders who talked to Autocar.
As nomenclature goes, the small-size SUV crossover will be badged CX-5, wearing a styling heavily influenced by the Kazamai Concept, which was showcased at the Moscow Motor Show in 2008. Three- and five-door versions could be produced, similar to the Land Rover Evoque.
In addition to a series of weight-reducing measures which would rank the CX-5 among the lightest in the segment, Mazda will introduce with the new model the latest generation of highly-efficient Sky engines equipped with direct-injection, low-friction blocks and piezo-electric injectors among other features. Along with stop-start and regenerative braking technologies, Mazda aims to improve fuel efficiency by at least 30 percent.
