Porsche has further committed themselves to the green cause, announcing plans of developing three all-electric, Boxster-based prototypes, all of which will allow the Stuttgart-based firm to fine-tune their all-electric-drive technology, including battery systems and other electric powertrain components. On-road testing will begin in Germany in early 2011.
“We will definitely be offering an electric sports car in future”, CEO Michael Macht said of Porsche's future in which performance and the environment are not exclusive. “But such a concept only makes sense if it offers product qualities typical of a Porsche”.
Adding on to the one-off 911 racing hybrid and Cayenne Hybrid, the first regular production model to be powered by a hybrid powertrain, Porsche will be launching the Panamera Hybrid in 2011, featuring the same petrol-electric hybrid powertrain as the Cayenne Hybrid. The full parallel hybrid system allows either the 329-bhp 3.0-litre supercharged V6 petrol engine, the 46-bhp electric motor or both to power the drivetrain. Power goes to the four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.
