Originally scheduled for launch in 2009, the Saab 9-4X was thought to have been shelved for good due to the uncertainty which surrounded the Swedish automaker. However, with its future relatively secure now, Saab is prepared to roll out the 9-4X again, releasing an official statement saying that the 9-7X replacement will be arriving “later this year”. And as these largely undisguised spy photos of the 9-4X prove, there should be no hiccups this time round.
Built on General Motors' Theta platform, the 9-4X is a luxury five-seater SUV targeted at the likes of Volvo XC60 and the next-generation BMW X3. While unconfirmed, the powertrain could include 2.0-litre four-cylinder and 2.8-litre V6 turbocharged petrol engines, as well as a 2.9-litre turbodiesel unit. A six-speed automatic transmission is expected to be standard, along with an all-wheel-drive system as optional.
