Nissan Leaf To Break The EV Silence With New Acoustic System

Public pressure calling for eerily silent electric vehicles (EV) to be installed with noise-emitters appears to have paid off. Nissan has invited around 500 people, including the media, government officials and customers, to drive the new Nissan Leaf—installed with the approaching vehicle sound for pedestrians system—at the company's Oppama test track in Japan next week.
Also expected to be installed on the Fuga hybrid, the system is the first of its kind from any automaker, developed from extensive behavioural research of the visually impaired, which is carried out in collaboration with various cognitive and acoustic psychologists over a four-year period.
The acoustic system will produce different sounds across a range of frequencies, from 2.5 KHz to 600 Hz, depending on the car's speed and acceleration. An on-board computer analyses the status of the car, before deciding on the type and volume of the sound to be produced via a speaker in the engine compartment. Check out a video introducing how Nissan came up with the system below!
