BMW Megacity EV To Spawn Audi R8-rivalling Sports Car

BMW's Megacity electric vehicle (EV) may be three years away from its 2013 launch date, but there has already been word of an EV sports car based on it, coming from none other than BMW's head of sales and marketing Ian Robertson, who went on to confirm that the Megacity will not be sold in “just one format”.

To be based on the Megacity's platform, the EV sports car is likely to draw inspiration from the radical Vision Efficient Dynamics Concept showcased at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. And to up the anticipation, BMW's pure-electric sports car will be competing with the likes of Audi R8 and Mercedes-Benz SL-Class.

The Megacity, BMW's first-ever mass-produced EV, is going to be no slouch, however. Robertson revealed that the Megacity will be built extensively from carbon-fibre, which could shave 30 percent off an equivalent aluminium car, in order to meet internally-set weight targets. In addition to wearing the BMW badge, the Megacity “would still be a BMW to drive”.
