Electric Cars Need Better Battery Technology To Go Mainstream, Says Honda

It will be 10 to 20 years before fully-electric cars become mainstream, according to Honda CEO and President Takanobu Ito, who believes that the current battery technology still needs a significant breakthrough if batteries are to sustain the range and power of electric cars, in the way fuel does for combustion-engine cars.
Honda is playing catch-up in most green areas: Toyota has established the Prius as the automatic choice in the hybrid segment, while Nissan has a large chunk of the electric segment to itself with the upcoming Leaf. By comparison, Honda's own hybrid, the Insight, has been largely overlooked as a relatively low-tech hybrid beside the Prius; Honda also has no electric vehicle in the pipelines we currently know of.
As a result, Ito says Honda is ready to ride on the Chinese government's latest move to encourage the development of electric vehicles through various grants and incentives. “There needs to be a major breakthrough in battery technology [for electric vehicles to be viable]”, said Ito. “If there is a suitable chance, we hope to work with China to develop batteries”.
