Peugeot & Citroen To Build New Compact SUVs Based On Mitsubishi ASX/RVR

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation and PSA Peugeot Citroen have agreed on a deal that allows the two French automakers to build compact SUVs based on Mitsubishi's ASX/RVR compact SUV. This collaboration would benefit all parties, lowering Peugeot and Citroen's cost of developing a platform from scratch, while increasing Mitsubishi Motors' economies of scale.
Peugeot and Citroen's new SUVs will provide a 110 bhp, 240 Nm 1.6-litre HDi diesel engine (from PSA) and a 2.0-litre diesel engine (from Mitsubishi), as well as a choice between two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive configurations. Peugeot and Citroen expect to sell a combined 50,000 units annually when the SUVs are launched in early 2012.
Such an agreement is the fourth between Mitsubishi and PSA: The first took place in 2005, involving the rebadging of Mitsubishi Outlander as Peugeot 4007 and Citroen C-Crosser; the second involved the construction of a joint plant in Russia that just begun production last week; and the most recent involved the rebadging of Mitsubishi i-MiEV into Peugeot iOn and Citroen C-zero electric vehicles, both of which will go on sale across Europe later this year.
