Jenson Button, the reigning world champion, has won the Chinese Grand Prix, thanks to yet another spot-on tyre call on a wet Shanghai circuit. This is Button's second victory in four races, after his first at the Australian Grand Prix, propelling him to the top of the drivers' championship. Lewis Hamilton secured a McLaren 1-2 finish, with Nico Rosberg of Mercedes claiming third.
Button showed excellent strategic decision-making by staying out on slick tyres early on in the rain when most competitors pitted for intermediates. “It was a tricky race and we called it right”, Button said. “It's not just about being quick; it's about reading the conditions”.
Button went as far as to label his victory as his best ever, attributing it not to luck but to decision-making. “For me, it is my best victory—every one you win becomes your best victory but this was pretty tough conditions”, Button added. “It is not luck we came out on top today; we chose correctly in the conditions”.
Ferrari's Fernando Alonso ended up fourth, and Renault's Robert Kubica took fifth. Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber, who started the race in first and second, only managed to finish sixth and eighth. Seventh position went to Kubica's teammate Vitaly Petrov.
