Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Chosen As Official F1 Safety Car

The 2010 Formula One season starts on March 12, and Mercedes-Benz has just announced the most powerful car that will be playing a key role for the entire F1 season—the most powerful official F1 safety car of all time, that is. The SLS AMG has been chosen to replace SL 63 AMG as the official F1 safety car, in no small part because it boasts 563 bhp at 6800 rpm and 650 Nm at 4750 rpm, drawn from the 6.2-litre V8 engine, which is paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Except for the LED roof light system, carbon fibre side mirrors, reverse camera, special number plate and F1 logos, the SLS AMG safety car is otherwise unchanged compared to the standard SLS AMG. Bernd Mayländer, a 38-year-old former DTM race car driver, is tasked with driving the safety car, and will be on standby in the pit lane for all 19 races.
