Proton Talking To Three Companies; Campro Turbo By Early 2011

Proton is in the midst of “intense discussions” with companies that include Volkswagen, Mitsubishi and Renault, says Proton Managing Director Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin Tahir, adding that various types of collaboration on engine platforms and component parts are on the table. But he refused to say more, or name a date for the announcement of Proton's future partner.

“We are looking at a big scope of collaboration; that's the level of discussions we are having today with the parties”, said Syed Zainal Abidin. “Yes, the discussions are quite intense. Hopefully, when the timing is right, an announcement will be made”.

Syed Zainal Abidin went on to confirm that the Campro turbo engine will be available in all Protons by late 2010 or early 2011. How good is the 1.6-litre engine? Well, “it is now as good as 2000cc”, according to former Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, the man instrumental in the formation of Proton. We can only wait and see if he is right.
