Introduced at the Chicago Auto Show is the Kia Ray concept, a futuristic, four-seater plug-in hybrid that previews future Kia/Hyundai hybrids. Based on Kia Forte's platform, the Ray showcases styling elements and hybrid technology that will eventually make it into production cars, beginning with the 2012 next-generation Kia Cee'd.
The hybrid drivetrain consists of a 151-bhp 1.4-litre petrol engine paired to a continuously variable transmission (CVT), alongside a 78 kW electric motor powered by a lithium ion battery pack. The Ray can travel 80.5 km on just electric power and 1200 km with the engine running. Fuel economy is 86 km/litre.
The Ray is designed with aerodynamics in mind and succeeds in having a drag coefficient of 0.25. Notable features include the aircraft-inspired tail section, roof-mounted solar cell array, one-piece underbody panel, U-shaped deck lid that extends out of the rear at higher speeds and narrow, low rolling resistance 195/50 tyres.
With the aim of lowering the Ray's weight, the interior makes use of lightweight and sustainable materials, such as with the mesh seats and wool felt flooring, respectively. The GreenEdge stereo system by Infinity Audio uses an amplifier and speakers that are more efficient than the norm, too. Kia's UVO voice- and touch-activated controls complete the Ray's high-tech interior.
