Honda Recalls 437,000 Vehicles Due To Faulty Airbags

Honda has decided to recall a further 437,000 vehicles due to faulty airbags, adding to a global recall that has lasted 15 months and involved nearly one million vehicles. Of the 437,000, 378,000 vehicles are in the U.S., 41,000 in Canada and 17,000 in Japan, Australia and other Asian countries.
According to Honda, the airbag inflator on the driver's side can deploy with excessive pressure, causing the inflator to rupture and injure the driver. To date, 12 such incidents—11 injuries and one death—have been attributed to the airbag problem. No incidents have been reported after July 2009, however.
The current recall brings the total affected vehicles to 952,118. Most of them are U.S.-only models—including the 2001 and 2002 Accord, Civic, Odyssey, CR-V, Pilot and 2002 Acura TL and CL—which are vastly different from their similarly-named counterparts found in Malaysia. All affected vehicles were produced at Honda's U.S. and Canadian plants.
Malaysia should be spared this recall, unlike the case for 16,025 Jazz and City models which were recalled last week by Honda Malaysia. But above all, Honda should be glad that Toyota is suffering from worse recalls of its own, having to recall 437,000 Prius and other hybrid models and 8.1 million other vehicles.
