What was rumoured months ago has now been confirmed. Talking to Autocar in Wolfsburg, Volkswagen Group chairman Martin Winterkorn confirmed that an entry-level Porsche positioned below Boxster is being evaluated. “We are also investigating opportunities for a smaller sports car and a smaller SUV, but I cannot say more at the moment”, Winterkorn said, adding “we do not usually waste our effort” when it comes to such evaluation.
Rumoured to be called the 356, the entry-level Porsche would be based on a new steel/aluminium platform currently being developed for the Audi R4 sports car. The 356 is likely to share a transmission with the Audi too, and is expected to debut Porsche's new turbocharged flat-four engine.
While Audi's R4 is well on its way to production by June 2011, Porsche's 356 is only expected in late 2012 or beyond. The “smaller SUV” that Winterkorn mentioned would likely come even further down the road.
