Big changes are coming up for Alfa Romeo, the Italian brand famous for producing beautiful cars. According to the Automotive News, Alfa Romeo, Maserati and Abarth, all companies under Fiat SpA, could be heading for a merger. This news follows the appointment of Maserati and Abarth CEO Harald Wester as the head of Alfa Romeo.
Wester is tasked with determining the synergies between the three brands, the report says. His findings will contribute towards the strategic review that Fiat is undertaking for the entire group. The finalised plans for the next five years will be announced in April.
The report goes on to suggest that Alfa Romeo could become a hatchback-only brand, with MiTo and the upcoming Giulietta making up the model range when older models like Brera and Spider are retired in a couple of years. Another option on the table involves the use of Chrysler platforms for the 159 and 166 replacements. Either way, Alfa Romeo appears set for change that should improve its long-term prospects.
