Perodua To Spring A Surprise In KLIMS 2013, Unnamed New Model For Second Plant In 2014
Perodua has a surprise planned for this November's Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show 2013 (KLIMS13).
"Come (and visit KLIMS13), we will have a surprise in store for you," said Perodua president and CEO Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh. He was speaking during Perodua's business performance review for the first half of 2013 in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
Aminar stopped short of revealing any further details of the show car but Live Life Drive understands that two out of Perodua's three-model line-up are due for an update.
The current 2013 Perodua Viva is the continuation of the Viva model line that has been on the market for slightly more than five years already, while the 2013 Perodua Alza is due for a customary mid-lifecycle facelift.
During the last KLIMS10, Perodua gave a sneak preview of the then yet-to-be-launched 2011 Perodua Myvi.
In the first six months of 2013, Perodua sold 96,900 vehicles, up four per cent from the same period last year, driven mainly by the introduction of the S-series models.
However, sales took a dip in the month of June, dropping 3.7 per cent to 50,2000 units compared with the same month last year, mainly due to customers withholding new car purchases in anticipation of lower car prices, which of course never materialized.
"Barring any unforeseen circumstances, we believe we can achieve our earlier target of 194,000 units by year-end," Aminar said.
Construction of Perodua's second plant in Rawang is on track and is expected to begin operation by the middle of 2014. A new company, Perodua Global Manufacturing Sdn. Bhd., has been set up to manage the new RM790 million plant.
As with Perodua's existing Perodua Manufacturing Sdn. Bhd. subsidiary, Perodua Global Manufacturing is a joint venture between Perodua Auto Corporation Sdn. Bhd. (51 per cent) and Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn. Bhd. (41 per cent).
The new subsidiary is chaired by Yasumitsu Morita from Perodua's technical partner Daihatsu Motor Corporation. Perodua Auto Corporation's former executive director Ahmad Suhaimi Hashim will take on the role of managing director, assisted by his deputy Izutani Takuji, also from Daihatsu.
The new plant has a capacity to produce 100,000 vehicles a year, including a yet-to-be-named new Perodua model. Little is known about the new model but Aminar did mention that Perodua will be involved in the upper body engineering of this new model, after gaining enough confidence and expertise from its technical partner Daihatsu.
Aminar also dismissed speculations of Perodua introducing models for the higher segment in the future. "Our strength is in compact cars and we will not deviate from that."
"Although we will not move too far away from this segment, there is still a lot of things that we can do (to grow our market share)," he added.
Currently, Perodua has a three-model line-up, starting with the entry-level A-segment 2013 Perodua Viva, progressing to its middle-range B-segment hatchback 2013 Perodua Myvi, and lastly the B-segment MPV 2013 Perodua Alza.
