Mercedes-Benz To Debut Auto-Swerving Safety Technology In Five Years
sponsored links
Mercedes-Benz, like Volvo, has always led the pack when it comes to safety technology. Talking to WhatCar?, Ulrich Mellinghoff, the German automaker's head of safety development, says safety systems of the future will be able to detect and steer around pedestrians, hence avoiding any accident. Mercedes-Benz is working on such a system, which should make production within five years.
Mellinghoff says only 20 percent of a car's front end comes into contact with the pedestrian in 80 percent of the accidents—which means accidents involving pedestrians can be avoided if the safety system intervenes and swerves the car by 40-50 cm.
This system is similar to Volvo's Collision Warning With Full Auto Brake And Pedestrian Detection system, which automatically detects the upcoming objects including pedestrians and brakes the car if the driver fails to intervene.
