Porsche has made public the 911 GT3 R at the Autosport International Show in Birmingham, UK. Built by Porsche's Motorsport Department, Porsche's latest FIA GT3 race car is based on the 911 GT3 RS road car, and comes equipped with ABS, traction control and a downshift throttle “blip” function, ensuring that casual racers who join the Racing Driver Development Programme will find the car more user-friendly and less intimidating. BMW has a similar customer racing program with the Z4 GT3.
Replacing the 911 GT3 Cup S, the 911 GT3 R definitely looks the part, featuring flared wheel arches all-round, fully covered underbody, LED rear lights, rear diffuser and rear wing.
Power from the modified six-cylinder Boxer engine, now 4.0-litre instead of 3.8-litre, goes to the rear wheels via a six-speed sequential gearbox. The on-track performance promises to be excellent, thanks to the maximum power of 480 bhp and the low kerb weight at just 1200 kg.
Deliveries of this 911 racer begin in the second quarter of 2010, with each costing 279,000 euros (1.34 million ringgit, without local taxes)!
