After more than two years of collaboration, General Motors, via its wholly-owned subsidiary General Motors Asia Pacific Holding Co LLC (GMAP), and DRB-HICOM Bhd have decided to part ways, ending the joint venture in Malaysia from January 1, 2010.
With GM holding 51 percent and DRB-HICOM having the remaining 49 percent, HICOM-Chevrolet Sdn Bhd was set up in August 2007 to import and distribute Chevrolet vehicles, parts and accessories in Malaysia on an exclusive basis.
According to various sources, GM wanted out because their demands for CKD operation were rejected by DRB-HICOM, who found Chevrolet models to be selling in too low a volume to justify local assembly.
As rumours go, Naza is now the forerunner to partner GM, which would add to its impressive portfolio of brand franchises which include Kia, Peugeot, Ferrari, Maserati and Brabus.
