Proton S16, or Proton Saga to Malaysians, has been on sale throughout Australia since December 1st, costing AUD 11,990, instead of the planned AUD 13,000, thanks to some favourable currency trends. What we have failed to notice is that Proton Cars Australia (PCA) has employed the Miss Universe Australia 2009, Rachel Finch, to spearhead its marketing campaign.
“Miss Universe Australia 2009 winner Rachel Finch will be the face of the new Proton S16 and will be featured in TV commercials and print advertising campaigns”, said PCA general sales and operations manager Billy Falconer.
We previously commended PCA's honest sales pitch in positioning S16 as Australia's lowest-priced sedan. And in the process, we may have lambasted the same people for marketing Proton Waja as “Asia’s answer to BMW”, simply because it is apparently not. Now, with PCA's latest move to employ a beauty queen to endorse the car, logical questions such as the following should arise: Will she steal the car's thunder? Or, will she in fact distract the target audience from looking at the car?
Perhaps it is not as bad as a case of beauty and the beast. But if you think about it, how many new cars are actually endorsed by celebrities?
