You are reading this right—No, it is not Lotus F1 Racing. Petronas, Malaysia's national oil and gas company, has inked a deal to be the title sponsor of Mercedes GP in a five-year agreement. Mercedes GP, renamed from reigning F1 champion Brawn GP, will be officially known as Mercedes GP PETRONAS Formula One Team from next season.
“The new title partnership also paves the way for future collaborations between the two companies”, Mercedes said in a statement. Meanwhile team principal Ross Brawn added that “Everyone at Mercedes GP is delighted to confirm our long-term agreement with Petronas”.
This development, however, means Lotus F1 Racing has lost out on a major sponsor. To make matters worse, Petronas is Malaysian and should logically be sponsoring the new Lotus F1 Team, after the sponsorship deal with BMW-Sauber recently ended.
Petronas will continue to be the title sponsor of the PETRONAS Malaysian F1 Grand Prix, which will host the third round of the 2010 F1 season at Sepang on April 4.
