Formula One legend Michael Schumacher is returning to the motor sport for Mercedes GP next year, says Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo, telling the press that Schumacher indicated “a very strong possibility” of racing for the German outfit next season.
Joking that it is Schumacher's “twin” that will be racing, not the Ferrari legend himself, Montezemolo said “There's another one who looks like him, 40, 41 years old, German, same name and decided to do a new career”.
“They think Michael is a traitor. But I will explain to them it is not Michael but another one. The real Michael is still with Ferrari”, he added, addressing the concern that some Ferrari fans may be offended by Schumacher's move to a rival team.
If it does happen, Schumacher will return to partner Nico Rosberg, forming an all-German team which Mercedes GP was rumoured to prefer. The official news will have to wait until January.
