Volvo has announced plans to launch the full-electric C30 at next month's Detroit Auto Show. It is an iteration of the C30 BEV prototype which first appeared at the recent Frankfurt Motor Show. While the C30 BEV was already drivable, the coming C30 will have enhanced battery packaging giving it a range of 150 km, in addition to a complete interior with full instrumentation.
Powered by a 111 bhp electric engine, the soon-to-debut C30 completes the century sprint in 10.5 seconds, before topping out at 130 km/h. At a standard power socket, the 280 kg lithium-ion batteries require about eight hours to charge. The 150 km range may not be that impressive, but the zero carbon dioxide emission level is.
After the launch next month, Volvo intends to build a test fleet of at least 50 electric C30s for participation in a two-year trial, which involves real-life usage that Volvo believes will provide valuable technical and behavioural feedback.
