Sauber F1, the team that has taken Toyota's place on the grid for 2010, has signed Kamui Kobayashi, the talented Japanese driver who impressed on his two outings for Toyota when he stood in for the injured Timo Glock.
“In the final two GPs of last season, he was granted an unexpected chance to show his skills, and he made impressive use of it”, Peter Sauber said. “I'm convinced he has a great deal of potential and will be able to make the most of it in our team”.
The 23-year-old Kobayashi appeared to have earned his full F1 drive for Toyota after impressing in Brazil and Abu Dhabi. But Toyota's decision to quit the motor sport left him pondering his future, which would have been working at his father’s sushi restaurant if not for the Sauber opportunity.
With prior racing experiences in Formula Renault, Formula 3 Euro Series, GP2 and GP2 Asia, Kobayashi could well be the dark horse for next season if he can keep his race performance at the level we saw.
