Kia Could Debut Compact, Affordable Sports Car In Five Years

The idea of a “compact, affordable and fun” rear-wheel driven Kia sports car is on the table, one that rivals relatively inexpensive sports cars like Mazda MX-5 and upcoming models from Toyota and Subaru, according to Kia's head designer Peter Schreyer in an interview with Autocar. Such a sports car could be based on Kia's Kee concept which debuted at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show. However, it would not feature in Kia's plans for Europe for the next two years.
“The next two years are about replacing and renewing our current line up of core models”, Schreyer said. “Before the end of 2011, we will launch an all-new Picanto, a replacement for the Rio and a new Magentis”.
Even so, Schreyer recognises that such a sports car would enhance the Kia brand's desirability, and that the use of a rear-wheel drive platform is important despite the higher costs involved. He reckons that, given Kia's current rate of growth in Europe, a car like Kee could materialise in five years, most probably with Hyundai Genesis' platform.
