Audi R8 e-Tron Coming In 2012; Electric Versions Limited To 1000 Units

First unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Audi R8 e-Tron electric supercar, to be known as R4 in production form, will head for production as soon as 2012. This is the second time that Audi has confirmed this news, this time to Autocar after talking to Autoweek in October.

R4 will share a new chassis with the next-generation Porsche Boxster and Cayman, and will be powered by a four-electric-motor system that generates 313 hp and 4500 Nm. 0–100 km/h takes 4.8 seconds; top speed stands at 200 km/h. Only 1000 units of electric R4 will be produced, however, each to be built to order.

Lower-end petrol versions of R4 are planned, too, to be positioned above Audi TT in the model range. Both models are likely to share the same engine range including a 335 bhp 2.5-litre turbocharged five-cylinder unit.
