Volkswagen Polo has won the 2010 European Car of the Year award. For the first time in 18 years, a Volkswagen has clinched the top prize in Europe; Volkswagen Golf won the award way back in 1992.
It was a close race, however. Of the seven finalists, which were rounded down from the initial 37, Polo received the highest points of 347, edging out Toyota iQ's 337. Third place went to Opel/Vauxhall Astra which had 221. Citroen C3 Picasso, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Peugeot 3008 and Skoda Yeti made up the rest of the finalists.
The European Car of the Year award panel of judges included 59 members from 23 European countries. France, Germany, U.K., Italy and Spain were represented with six members each. Cars eligible for the award consideration must be available for sale in at least five European countries.
Unfortunately for us, Malaysians, the Polo currently on sale in Malaysia is not the all-new Polo in question. And Volkswagen Malaysia has not announced plans to bring in the new European Car of the Year any time soon.
