General Motors Testing Noise-Emitting Device On Electric Chevrolet Volt
sponsored links
A hybrid's lack of vehicle noise has been a problem all these while, with studies showing that, in certain situations, electric or hybrid vehicles are twice as likely to be involved in accidents with pedestrians, particularly the blind. Although not yet legally required to do so, General Motors is currently testing a noise-emitting device on the all-electric Chevrolet Volt.
In a collaboration between GM, Chevrolet and the National Federation of the Blind (NFB), Chevrolet engineers are testing a detection-warning system that involves the car emitting a series of warning chirps—the volume and variation of which are still under evaluation—when a pedestrian is detected near the car. Depending on the feedback received from various groups, particularly the NFB, the final results of the testing will go towards creating an industry standard for electric and hybrid vehicles.
