2010 BMW 5-Series Fully Unveiled And Detailed

After much teasing, the all-new sixth generation BMW 5-Series has finally been fully unveiled. And we must add that it looks much like the 5-Series we expected it to be. Like the new 7-Series, this 5-Series continues BMW's move towards conservatism, away from the controversy that followed Chris Bangle's many designs.

Built alongside 7-Series in BMW's Dingolfing plant, 5-Series uses a platform largely derived from 7-Series'. For the first time since 1965, the front MacPherson strut suspension system makes way for a more sophisticated multi-link system that also serves the rear.

The Sport Package comes with Adaptive Drive—an electronic system encompassing Driving Dynamics Control, Dynamic Damping Control and Active Roll Stabilisation. Integral Active Steering is optional.

The engine range consists of three six-cylinder and one eight-cylinder petrol engines, plus two six-cylinder diesel engines. Of the three six-cylinder petrols, 523i delivers 204 hp, 528i has 258 hp, and the twin turbo 535i delivers 306 hp. The 550i TwinPower Turbo V8 comes with 407 hp. Of the two six-cylinder diesels, 525d delivers 204 hp and 530d has 245 hp.

A 184 hp four-cylinder turbodiesel will be added to the range about three months later, with a fuel economy of 19.2 km/litre and carbon dioxide emission level of 137 grams/km. BMW's all-new eight-speed automatic transmission is standard across all models.

In line with BMW's EfficientDynamics technology, Brake Energy Regeneration, active air flap control and a gearshift point indicator are standard features, along with a lightweight body construction making use of more aluminium, such as in the doors, bonnet, front fenders and suspension.

It is more than just increased performance and efficiency with the new 5-Series, however: there is a gain of more than half an inch in rear knee room, and 515 litres of boot space which is further extendable via the 60:40 split-fold rear seats.

On the inside, BMW's fourth-generation iDrive system is the highlight, appearing in either the standard 7-inch, 800x480 pixel display or optional 10.2-inch, 1280x480 pixel display. The latter offers a wider range of functions similar to 7-Series'. And of course, displays are transreflective so that any image or content appear perfectly visible under the glare of the sunlight.

Other high-tech items include: Head-Up Display, ultrasound-enabled Parking Assistant, a new Speed Limit Device, BMW Night Vision, Lane Change Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Active Cruise Control and Surround View.

5-Series will make its European debut in March next year, before finding its way to this part of the world. So you can expect to hear more details on the local pricing around that time.
