2013 Ford Kuga Opens For Booking In Malaysia From RM168k; Launch Set for June 6
Sime Darby AutoConneXion, the distributor of Ford vehicles in Malaysia is set to launch the all new 2013 Ford Kuga SUV on 6th of June, this year (2013). The Kuga will succeed the Escape, which has since been discontinued.
The Kuga is imported as a completely built up (CBU) model from Ford's Valencia plant in Spain. Prices start from RM 168,000 and interested buyers can place a pre-booking at Ford sales outlets nationwide.
“Customers today are chasing value-for-money and the all-new Ford Kuga delivers,” said David Westerman, regional manager, Asia Pacific, Ford Export & Growth Operations. “With the EcoBoost petrol engine standard in the all-new Kuga Titanium, customers now have even more reasons to consider the all-new Ford Kuga.”
Performance and economy:
The Kuga is powered by Ford's latest generation EcoBoost petrol engine. The 1.6-litre EcoBoost engine may appear small to buyers unaccustomed to the current crop of downsized engines, but with 177HP (132 kW) of power and 240Nm of torque on tap, this turbocharged unit is more than capable of matching a regular 2.4-litre class engine.
While the 1.6-litre EcoBoost is powerful enough to match a much larger engine, fuel consumption is only a miserly 7.7l/100km (manufacturer's data), comparable to a 1.6-litre compact family sedan.
Aiding the Kuga's exceptional fuel economy is an Active Grille Shutter feature, which improves aerodynamic efficiency by closing the engine bay's air vents when travelling at higher speeds and engine load is low.
The Ford Kuga's ample power and torque is distributed to all four wheels via an Intelligent AWD system. The system works to maintain optimal traction by assessing the road conditions 20 times faster than the blink of an eye to constantly adjust power distribution between the front and rear wheels.
The primary goal of the AWD system at low speeds is traction; at speeds above 30 km/h the AWD system is tuned to improve driving feel, handling and response. A unique cluster display shows drivers the torque demand of each wheel at any moment.
Ford's hallmark Torque Vectoring Control (TVC) feature, which we already have seen in the Ford Focus, one of the best handling cars in its class, is also present in the Kuga, albeit with a unique setup to match the Kuga's performance requirements as an SUV.
Comfort and Convenience:
Compared to the outgoing Escape, the Kuga features bigger cabin. The Kuga rides 8mm lower for a more passenger car-like ride and handling behaviour.
Overall length has been extended by 81mm, much of this extension has been devoted to the rear passenger area. As for width, it is marginally narrower than before, at 4 mm less.
The second row's seatbacks can be adjusted within a 10-degree range, providing better comfort for the rear passengers. Cargo capacity is also 46 litres more than before.
Like all recent Ford models, the Kuga features another hallmark of Ford's innovation - SYNC voice activated control, which allow drivers to control the car's audio system, make phone calls, send, receive and read out SMS on their Bluetooth enabled mobile phones by just speaking naturally to the SYNC system.
At the rear of the car is a hands-free power liftgate that can be opened simply by waving your foot beneath the rear bumper. The feature is a great help when your hands are full and you need to open the liftgate. As long as the key fob is in your pocket or bag, a simple waving motion of your feet will release the liftgate while electric motors will gently push it open upwards. Sensors for the hands-free power liftgate have been thoroughly tested, ensuring that the system safeguards against accidental openings.
The 2013 Ford Kuga was recently awarded a maximum five stars rating by EuroNCAP, making it one of the safest SUV in its class. Although the Sime Darby AutoConneXion have yet to release the complete specifications list for the Malaysian market Kuga, we expect the model to come with all the major safety equipment options ticked.
More information will be revealed when we approach closer to the Kuga's launch date on the 6th of June, 2013.
