No, the all-new BMW 5-Series has yet to be launched. But our exclusive pictures show precisely how it will look like. As you can see, 5-Series will look more conservative than before, sporting a double-kidney grille and a tail inspired by 7-Series. The cabin layout will be similar to 5-Series GT's, according to insider sources, who also divulge information on 5-Series' future engine lineup.
The basic 520i will come with a 175 bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, which will be replaced by a 200 bhp turbocharged 2.0-litre engine later in the model cycle. The 530i will carry over the 272 bhp 3.0-litre inline-six engine, although the 550i will borrow the 401 bhp twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 engine from 7-Series. On the diesel front, the 177 bhp 520d, 235 bhp 530d and 286 bhp twin-turbo 535d will remain, but the 197 bhp 525d will be dropped.
20mm longer than before, the new 5-Series will offer advanced features like four-wheel steering, active rear differential and stop-start technology, which will lower carbon dioxide emissions by 10-15 percent; Four-cylinder models come standard with it from launch, but six-cylinder and V8 models will have to wait a year.
Likely to launch in 2011 is the ActiveHybrid 5, driven by an electric motor and 218 bhp 3.0-litre petrol engine, mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The new M5 will arrive in 2012, powered by a 555 bhp twin-turbo 4.8-litre V8 engine.
