Daimler AG and Abu Dhabi's investment company Aabar Investments PJSC have bought a 75 percent stake in Brawn Grand Prix, the team that won the 2009 F1 World Championship in its first year of competition. Brawn Grand Prix will be renamed Mercedes Grand Prix, but Ross Brawn and Nick Fry will retain a 24.9 percent stake. The former will continue in his position as the team principal.
Of the remaining 75.1 percent stake, Mercedes-Benz will take 45.1 percent, leaving 30 percent for Aabar Investments. Currently holding a 40 percent stake in McLaren, Mercedes-Benz will sell back the entire stake back to McLaren by the end of 2011, although the latter will continue with engines from Mercedes-Benz until 2015.
The confirmation of this deal also means that current World Champion Jenson Button will likely move to McLaren, with replacements Nico Rosberg and Nick Heidfeld filling in. Button is rumoured to double his £3.5 million (RM 19.9 million) salary at the British team, where he will be partnered by 2008 World Champion Lewis Hamilton.
