Adaptive, Smart Traffic Light System The Way Forward, Says BMW

BMW has always been on the forefront of efficiency technologies. Via the EfficientDynamics concept, BMW aims to reduce fuel consumption and emission levels while providing driving pleasure which BMW has always stood for. But to BMW, adjusting a car's parameters is not adequate; the surrounding in which the car is driven is of similar importance.

Adaptive, smart traffic lights play a key role towards a green future, says BMW. For now, traffic lights around the world do not adapt to situations, causing lots of needless idling in preventable traffic jams. By adjusting the traffic signal timing to provide for a smoother drive, BMW was able to improve fuel efficiency by almost a hundred percent. In the real-world, a 10 to 15 percent improvement in fuel efficiency is possible.

For now, BMW is meeting with the U.S. Department of Transportation, hoping to improve on one archaic traffic light system at a time.
