2012 Mazda CX-5 Launched In Malaysia, Becomes Most Expensive In Segment
The 2012 Mazda CX-5 has been launched in Malaysia for RM 159,500 in FWD form and RM 169,760 in AWD guise (OTR with insurance). If you have never heard of the CX-5, that is down to it being a first-generation compact SUV introduced to take on the smaller-sized Mitsubishi ASX and the well-known players such as the Honda CR-V and Kia Sportage. However, the CX-5's pricing appears optimistic, surpassing that of all competition.
The CX-5 is also the first Mazda to feature the all-new “KODO – Soul of Motion” design language and the latest Skyactiv Technology, which covers a range of engines, transmissions, chassis and bodies thoroughly re-engineered for the new Mazdas. Take for example the CX-5's body, which is light yet strong thanks to the use of 61 percent high-tensile steel. The front strut and rear multi-link suspension system is said to be lighter yet stiffer than a similar setup on a previous Mazda.
The sole engine option, the SkyActiv-G 2.0-litre direct-injected petrol engine produces 155 HP at 6000 rpm and 200 Nm at 4000 rpm. (The AWD variant has one horse and two Nm less than its FWD counterpart.) Mazda says the engine boasts a compression ratio of 13:1, the highest on a mass production car, and that the 4-2-1 exhaust system is specially-designed. With the SkyActiv-Drive six-speed automatic transmission as standard, the AWD CX-5 returns 13.7 km/litre in fuel economy.
Inside, the leather-upholstered, five-seater cabin comes with a class-leading wheelbase of 2700 mm and a fairly large luggage space of 500 litres, which can be expanded via 40/20/40 split-folding second row seatbacks with remote release levers. Mazda has included a number of premium features to justify the asking price: the driver seat is power-adjustable six- or eight-way with power lumbar support; and a 5.8-inch touch-screen is linked to a reverse camera, Bluetooth hands-free connectivity, a nine-speaker Bose Centerpoint Surround Sound System, and a TomTom-based navigation system.
Other high-end features are bi-xenon headlamps with Adaptive Front-Lighting System, plus automatic levelling and automatic on/off functions; daytime running lights, rain-sensing wipers, cruise control, smart start system, a sunroof and 19" alloys. The safety kit is comprehensive, too, counting six front, side and curtain airbags, braking controls (ABS, EBD & BA), traction and stability controls (TCS & DSC), a Tyre Pressure Monitor (TPM), anti-whiplash front headrests and seatbelt pretensioners.
