2012 Volkswagen Passat CKD Launched In Malaysia, Shaves RM14K Off CBU Price
The locally-assembled Volkswagen Passat has finally been launched in Malaysia. The CKD Passat 1.8 TSI is priced at RM 170,888, a discount of RM 14K compared with the RM 184,888 price tag hanging on the exact same car when it was launched in CBU form last October. Already available for viewing and buying at all 18 Volkswagen outlets in Malaysia, the now-cheaper Passat 1.8 TSI will be joined by other CKD variants priced between RM 169,888 and RM 184,888.
That is a saving of 7.6 percent for the same car with the same powertrain—a 1.8-litre turbocharged, direct-injected TSI engine, producing 160 HP and 250 Nm, paired to the class-leading seven-speed dual-clutch DSG transmission—and the exact same specs. The question is one of quality, an area that Volkswagen Malaysia insists it will never compromise on. For now, the Passat is assembled from CKD kits imported from Europe, but the issue of quality and reliability could become a bigger factor as more parts become locally-sourced.
Volkswagen Malaysia and assembler DRB-Hicom are in the midst of vetting local vendors, and it is expected that the entire process of finding the right local vendors, and the sourcing of local parts and components to reach the local content target of 40 percent, would be complete by 2014. It is then that the export of the locally-assembled Passat, over 300 units of which are ready for delivery, to the rest of the ASEAN region will begin. With the eventual local assembly of the Jetta and the Polo sedan, the production numbers at DRB-Hicom's Pekan plant is projected to increase from the current 23,000 units to 50,000 units annually.
