For the past decade or so, the Toyota brand is almost a synonym to reliability in the automotive world and that is the underlying reason why it is currently the largest car producer in the world. Unfortunately, superior dependability, efficiency and advanced technology do not equate to excitement, the ingredient that Akio Toyoda is seeking to add into the recipe for Toyota to build more inspiring cars. After all, how many of you actually have a Camry, Wish or Prius as your desktop wallpaper?
Thankfully, all is about to change! Toyota took the first step of injecting excitement and inspiration into its DNA by resurrecting one of its past spiritual leaders, the AE86. The successor to the Hachi-Roku line of rear-wheel drives will be unveiled as the Toyota FT-86 Concept in the upcoming 2009 Tokyo Motor Show.
Being a concept, details are still sketchy at the moment but we do know what the rear wheel drive brainchild from the collaboration with Subaru will be powered by a Subaru sourced 2.0-liter boxer engine. With its compact dimensions registering at 163.7 inches long, 69.3 inches, a wheelbase of 101.2 inches, and 49.6 inches high, this makes the Toyota FT-86 smaller in length, width and height than its Japanese compatriot, the Nissan 370Z, but marginally longer in wheelbase.
