Detroit Auto Show: 2012 Porsche 911 Cabriolet Makes Its World Premiere

The 2012 Porsche 911 Cabriolet has made its world premiere at the Detroit Auto Show, in the form of Carrera and Carrera S variants from launch. The longer wheelbase and extensive aluminium construction—both detailed in the 911 Coupe—aside, the highlight is an innovative fabric-skinned composite plastic folding hood, specially developed to replace the traditional multi-layered fabric material used in previous 911 Cabriolets.
To feature on the upcoming third-generation Porsche Boxster as well, the new hood, supported on a lightweight magnesium frame, utilises two fabric-skinned composite plastic panels for the upper and rear parts of the roof structure. The sides are made of multi-layered fabric like before. A rear glass window is glued on to the fabric skin.
In addition to a reduction in weight, the new roof is now more uniform and tauter than before, allowing the cabriolet to look exactly like the coupe with the top up, while reducing wind buffeting at high speeds. It operates quickly too, requiring just 11 seconds to open or close, and can be operated at speeds up to 60 km/h. Enjoy the 2012 Porsche 911 Cabriolet live photo gallery below!
