The 2013 Ford Fusion has been unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show, showing us the Blue Oval's contender against the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord in the U.S. and Europe, where it will be badged a Ford Mondeo, a namesake used in Malaysia as well. The Fusion will be the fourth global model after the Focus, the Fiesta, and the Escape, which will be sold in Europe in early 2013 as the Kuga.
The Ford Fusion carries a profile similar to that of the Ford Evos Concept, a face dominated by an Aston Martin-like front grille, and the rest of its body evolved from that of the current Mondeo's. Handsome looks aside, the Fusion is the first sedan ever to be offered with petrol, hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains, translating into class-leading fuel economy. Diesel units will be available in Europe.
The Ford Fusion's conventional engine range available from its year-end launch includes a 1.6-litre EcoBoost engine with 179 HP and 233 Nm, a 2.0-litre EcoBoost engine with 237 HP and 339 Nm, and a 2.5-litre naturally-aspirated engine with 170 HP and 231 Nm. The Fusion Hybrid comes with a 2.0-litre engine mated to an electric motor for a combined output of 180 HP. The most efficient title goes to the Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid, which has 185 HP and yet returns up to 42.5 km/litre.
Underpinning the Ford Fusion and Mondeo, which is reputable for its class-leading dynamics, is an all-new platform that continues to utilise MacPherson front and multi-link rear suspensions. The chassis and the body—13 mm longer, 26 mm higher, though 35 mm narrower—are 10 percent stronger than before, improving the handling and safety integrity of the car.
