Detroit Auto Show: Honda Returns To Form With Acura NSX Concept

Honda is finally getting back into the sports car arena with the Acura NSX Concept, which has been unveiled at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show—seven years after pulling the original NSX from the production lines. And this time it is for real. Unlike the two concept cars and one race car released since 2005, the new NSX will be on the roads by 2015, according to Honda.
The new NSX will follow the same successful formula as the original two-seater NSX with a naturally-aspirated V6 installed mid-engined, but will feature extensive use of lightweight materials such as aluminium and carbonfibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP). Honda maintains that the iconic NSX, which found fame and a popular following for its outstanding power-to-weight ratio, will deliver “high performance through engineering efficiency”.
Like before, power from the V6 goes to the rear wheels, though the modern need for efficiency means that Honda's Sport Hybrid SH-AWD (Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive) system is in place, channeling the engine output to the rear via a dual-clutch transmission with a built-in electric motor. Two small electric motors, one on each front wheel, augment the amount of torque sent to the front wheels during cornering, improving handling and traction.
Honda has not revealed the performance figures or engine details, but if the new NSX is to share the same powertrain as the upcoming Acura MDX, we can expect 314 HP from a naturally-aspirated, direct-injected 3.5-litre VTEC V6, a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission with a 41 HP electric motor, and twin 27 HP electric motors for the front wheels.
