In yet another vote of confidence to electric cars, the all-electric Nissan Leaf has won the 2011-2012 Japan Car of the Year award, sweeping everything there is to win, including the 2011 European Car of the Year and the 2011 World Car of the Year awards. This latest award, announced at the ongoing Tokyo Motor Show, goes to an electric vehicle for the first time ever.
Nissan-Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn believes that all those accolades, along with 20,000 units of the Nissan Leaf sold mostly in Japan and the US, clearly represent endorsement of the Leaf and the zero-emission mobility target behind it. In fact, Nissan has greater vision for the Leaf than just mere transportation, as the on-board high-capacity lithium-ion batteries are capable of supplying electricity to houses.
Over the next five years, Nissan and Renault expect to sell a combined 1.5 million electric vehicle units, based on estimates that the global market share of electric vehicles would jump from the current 0.05 percent to 15 percent in a decade's time, with the global market share of hybrid cars rising from the present 1 percent to between 5–10 percent over the same time.
