This is the Subaru Advanced Tourer Concept, a continuation of the 2009 Subaru Hybrid Tourer Concept, on show at the Tokyo Motor Show, previewing the next-generation Subaru Legacy and the company's hybrid technology set for production in 2013.
To fulfil its role as an estate of the future, the Subaru Advanced Tourer features a dynamic, coupe-like exterior, the practicality expected of a C-segment estate, and a positive ambience created by the entirely glass roof, a large monitor built into the centre of the steering wheel, and the generous use of wood and metal materials.
Like many other automakers, Subaru believes that engine downsizing through the application of turbocharging, direct fuel injection and hybrid technologies is the way forward to achieve a balance between driving performance and environmental friendliness.
Powering the Subaru Advanced Tourer is therefore a 1.6-litre horizontally-opposed Boxer engine, equipped with direct fuel injection and turbocharging, that generates an output level to rival that of the current 2.5-litre Boxer engine, but with much lower carbon emissions and a better fuel economy.
The drivetrain is completed by Subaru's Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) system—which pairs the engine to a single electric motor powered by lithium-ion batteries—Lineartronic CVT and the company's trademark Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system.
